Family History
Each year we receive a number of enquiries from people researching their family’s history and we are pleased to help, where we are able.
If you have a query, the notes which follow may be helpful.
Please be aware that if your query requires us to search through registers, or you want us to supply a copy of a certificate, a fee is payable. Details can be obtained from the parish office.
St Nicholas' church was consecrated in 1839: if your enquiry is about an event which happened before that date, then it did not take place here! (Sorry – but we do get asked about baptisms, weddings and funerals which happened before the church was built!)
Our church is St Nicholas', Halewood: we are not the only church in the region dedicated in the name of St Nicholas'!
Other churches with similar names include Liverpool’s famous and historic parish church of Our Lady and St Nicholas, at the Pier Head on the river Mersey (also known as ‘the sailors’ church). There has been a church there since at least 1257, so if your query is about something that happened a long time ago, this is the most likely contender!
There are also churches named after Saint Nicholas in Blundellsands, Whiston and Sutton (St Helens).
Records of burials in the churchyard can be inspected online.
Please be aware that record-keeping in the past was not always as thorough as it is today: it wasn’t until 1931 that the graves were numbered – after burials had been taking place for 90 years.
